We are delighted to share that our School and Sixth Form has once again been recognised as a Makaton Friendly Organisation, reaffirming our commitment to inclusive communication and our dedication to supporting every member of our community.
With this renewed status, our School and Sixth Form continue to appear on the national Makaton Map – a valuable resource for families seeking environments where communication needs are understood, welcomed, and supported.
This recognition highlights the consistent, everyday commitment shown across our school and the wider Foundation.
How We Use Makaton
- Makaton is woven throughout school life, featuring in lessons, activities, routines, signage, greetings, emotional-regulation strategies, and daily interactions.
- Staff and students use Makaton to communicate with those who have speech, language, or communication needs, as well as to support understanding for pupils with additional learning needs.
- By making communication accessible, Makaton helps to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and ensure every child feels seen, supported, and heard.
Raising Awareness Nationally
As part of maintaining our Makaton Friendly status, we will continue supporting the national charity by showcasing Makaton in action.
Weekly videos will introduce families to new signs and strengthen the home – school connection, helping parents to feel confident using Makaton at home. These videos will also be a valuable resource for anyone keen to learn more and support communication beyond the school day.
Continuing Our Commitment
Our renewed Makaton Friendly status reflects not only our values, but our ongoing actions.
“We are deeply committed to inclusive communication across our School and Sixth Form. Regular staff training ensures Makaton remains embedded in everyday practice, and offering this training is a key part of our continued commitment to maintaining our Makaton Friendly status.
We are also proud to share our expertise through the Calderdale Special Cluster, supporting other settings to develop confidence and consistency in using Makaton to enhance communication for all learners.”
Chelsea Singh, Art Psychotherapist & Makaton Lead
A huge thank you to our dedicated staff and enthusiastic students, who continue to embed Makaton within our school culture.
