School Principal
I have been teaching for almost 30 years and have spent most of these in special education, particularly working with pupils with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. Time spent in this most rewarding of sectors within the educational system has given me much pleasure and a wealth of experience.
I was appointed to my current post in 1997 and have been involved in both OfSTED and Social Services inspections carried out under a variety of frameworks.
I have continued to develop my skills by attending a variety of courses over the years and was a founder member of the National Association of EBD Schools now known as ‘Engage’, where I still serve as National Secretary. This has allowed me to visit many other schools, given me an insight into them and helped with my evaluation of where WHSS is currently. I am also trustee of the Cicely Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged, vulnerable and disadvantaged children in both the UK and throughout the world by supporting work linked to education, health and well-being.
I firmly believe that every pupil who attends our school, for whatever length of time, benefits from the experience. I believe all can and do succeed and raising self esteem through academic and social achievement is at the heart of what we do at WHSS.
I enjoy almost all sports, especially from my armchair, but particularly enjoy playing golf and walking. Other interests include reading, listening to music, comedy, travel and cooking. Being a Lancastrian working in Yorkshire in an old establishment such as WHSS, which has cared for children for almost 100 years, has also developed my interest in local history.
We never stop learning!
